5 S has been widely used in the world now a days. Doesn’t matter what kind of business you are in. It is believed that 5 S is introduced by Toyota as a basic and foundation in every activity including Toyota Production Systems (TPS) and Total Productive Maintenance (TPM).

It is a concept of housekeeping that is implemented in the factory by Toyota. It will directly contributed to reducing waste so called Muda, Mura & Muri by the Japanese.

The 5 S are descibed below:

  1. Seiri: keep what is needed. Separate between what is needed and unneeded items. Keep what needed and thow away the unneeded.
  2. Seiton: arrange and make a proper place for the needed items. Organize in a way that ensures needed things are kept close at hand. The things are easier to find and easier to return to it place. Which mean a proper keeping systems is been setup.
  3. Seiso: this mean clean and maintain on regular basis. A schedule and method has been established to keep everything clean and ready to use.
  4. Seiketsu: Established methods within related area that will ensure the effective continuation of steps 1 to 3.
  5. Shitsuke: Set up a systems that sustain the 5 S process. Ensure that all 4 steps above are maintained.

A factory is believed to have a lot of problems if this concept is not implemented and have a decipline to execute the process. Other activities such as kanban, standardization and many more shall not be acheive if 5 S concept is not executed.
